The advantages of HIFU Procedure

This year, approximately 242,000 men from the U.S. and yet another 25,000 in Canada will be clinically determined to have cancer of prostate. The median day of diagnosis is 67. With cancer of prostate being so prevalent, finding treatments which are effective without significant unwanted side effects is the focus for several urologists. A more modern cancer of the prostate treatment that's continuing to gain favor and results is HIFU - or Intense Focused Ultrasound.

Localized prostate type of cancer is cancer that is completely within the prostate gland. This is also known as T1 or T2. T1 can be a term used by experts to spell it out prostate type of cancer in their very beginning. At this point the tumors are really small they haven't begun to cause any signs and symptoms. T2 can be used to spell it out cancer that, while it is still limited to the prostate related, the twelve signs and symptoms have started to make themselves known.

HIFU Cancer of prostate Treatment. HIFU uses focused ultrasound as a technique to heat and destroy cancer tissue. Focused just like a laser is targeted, sound waves strike the targeted tissue and heat it. The targeting is done by having an MRI scan.

The ultrasound pulse that destroys the tissue it strikes includes a very small part of effect; only a few cubic millimeters. The tissue affected can no longer grow or multiply, but healthy tissue right close to it can be left untouched.

Healthy tissue remaining in the prostate post-treatment remains to be capable of function, grow and multiply as normal. This provides the patient an excellent possibility of an entire recovery from the cancer.

Some day Treatment. HIFU can be a non-invasive procedure done while on an out-patient basis. A local and a general anesthetic receive while the patient lies on his side. After the anesthetic has had effect, a rectal probe is inserted until it really is right up beside the men's prostate. An MRI scans the region from the prostate and the tumors from it are isolated and targeted.

Following the targeting facts are collected, the HIFU device sends pulses of focused ultrasound on the tissue impacted by cancer. Several cubic mm at a time, the diseased tissue is heated to 80°C and destroyed. Once heated, the tissue is dead and definately will not grow. To deal with the whole lot of the men's prostate takes approximately 2 to 4 hours.
